It would seem that all of our thoughts, doubts and fears about GWB and his band of cronies are true. Aptly characterized in the Comedy Channel's "lil Bush," the administration's shameless arrogance and elitism has have led us down the garden path although we have to admit, we knew what was happening. Really, we did. The media also knew but, by their own recent admission, did nothing - absolutely nothing - about it. Which goes to show that our once powerful 4th estate is now only suitable as talking heads for the Entertainment Network and are an extinct species.
Sadder still is the fact that we have 150,000 troops in Iraq for five years no apparent reason. US forces have killed far more than Saddam ever did. 4,574 US soldiers dead as of today's date with an estimated 35,000 maimed and injured. A war carefully orchestrated so that we, the populace, see little or nothing of the reality of the returning dead, see little of the destroyed US lives of the wounded, and, of course, have seen nothing of the 100's of thousands of Iraqi dead as the military has been told not to record a body count. All in the name of what exactly? A war without a purpose, goal or outcome.
Condalisa Rice, the Secretary of State, is a Bush shill. Her job, her tenure, her world traveling has been for nothing. An arrogant intellectual with little in the way of street smarts she has been carrying Dick Chaney's big stick for him for her entire term. She was never one of the boys and was by default a "yes" woman, afraid of rejection lest she be excluded. You look at Colin Powell and at Ms. Rice and wonder "what the %#$* happened?" Her statements on world affairs have as much credibility as my dog's. She will certainly go into the history books under "Condalisa who?" So much opportunity to make a place for herself in high office as a woman and as an African American. All wasted.
We the people have let this administration away - literally - with murder and in bankrupting our country. The estimated cost of this war is $3tn which we have had to borrow, mainly from China and Middle Eastern countries. Billions of dollars have gone unaccounted for; simply disappeared. Fortunes have been made by private industry. For the first time the use of mercenaries has become respectable by renaming them 'security consultants.'
This administration has done little to advance women or women's issues. For eight years the Stepford First Lady, Laura Bush, has waved at us - queenlike - from her many pantsuits and heavy makeup and done...nothing. She has publicly supported no causes worth mentioning. When Mrs. Bush was in Saudi Arabia a woman was being beaten for having been raped. Mrs. Bush said nothing about the issue and instead spoke about breast cancer. Saudi men's response was "women have breasts?" Women's roles, in my opinion, have been pushed further back in the past eight years than forward. It like the 1950's again. Women, it would seem according to this administration, are to be seen and not heard.
Dick Chaney is, in my opinion, the real president of our country and has, since 9/11, stayed out of sight and out of harms way. Harm in the form of accountability and questioning. He even managed to shoot his friend in the face and walk away from it clean. He's a smart guy, a career politician and able to make a few bucks for himself ala Haliburton along the way. He has my respect because, like GB senior, he is qualified having been in politics for a lifetime. His motives, his loyalties and his legacy will have to be left to the history books.
Politicians serve their country, serve their people, not the other way around. Security issues aside, transparency is the cornerstone of the office of the presidency. In eight years we've hear little about the White House or what goes on there. The door was quietly closed in our face when GWB moved in.
We have been collective fools. We must hope that in the aftermath of this administration the president and his band of merry men are held accountable. The last president was hung from the yard-arm for a bl*wjob and a lie. This one's a criminal.
One hopes that the world court will have the balls to go where our courts haven't and seek to prosecute these individuals for war crimes. The outcome is important; the American people need to speak and show the world that no-one is above the law; and demonstrate that we - the people - expect our politicians to be accountable for their actions while in office.
