Iran: Bush has nothing to lose

War with Iran, Bush has nothing to lose: And he doesn’t. Bush can even implement the front door draft as opposed to the current back door draft where he is over extending soldiers tours of duty. Why? There’s no consequence for him. He’s got nothing to lose and everything to gain if he throws the dice one more time and he comes up winning. If not, the Republicans are going to get trounced anyway in the November elections, they all know that. And when you look at it logically why would they want to be in the spotlight for the next four years? America is sitting on the edge of a precipice – not a sky-faller, more of a social one. I think the economy will turn around quicker than anyone thinks because everyone’s doing what they have to – layoffs, overhead restructuring, mergers. But we’re saddled with generations of debt and a war that we can’t get out of despite all the politic-speak. We could even, dare I say it, bet looking at a potential end of days conflict if Iran decides to unleash its intercontinental ballistic missiles on Europe.

It’s a conundrum that GW won’t have to worry about after January of next year when he winters out in Saudi Arabia with the Bin Laden family and then heads back to Texas to cut some wood on the ranch.

The draft board was reformed quietly some years ago. Nobody said much though it did hit the news. We were told it was par for the course, not to worry. The fact is that if we strike Iran we have to be able to sustain a war in the Middle East twice or three times the size of our current commitment. Iran’s a big place. Even if we implement a limited and effective air-strike against collateral targets (great words for bombing the crap out of stuff) and rid the world of the Iranian nuclear threat, the Iranians aren’t just going to sit and take it. Why should they?

Those shimmering clouds of dust on the Afghan and Iraqi borders will not be sand storms. They’ll be millions of irate pissed Iranians bent on our destruction. If I was a general in charge I would at that point say “f*ck-it” and leave - a wise move in the circumstances and let the locals hash it out for themselves.

More likely we’ll realize that to control the situation quickly we’ll need boots on the ground. Lots of them. Even with all of our troops and reserves, and the highly paid mercenaries we have working for us and the limited input from other nations - who I have to say are next to useless, I mean the Australians just up and decided to go home from Iraq the other day just when things were working out – we still will need lots of soldiers over there. My kids and yours, if they’re 18 and up, are going to get letters soon to remind them of their obligation to Uncle Sam.

The democrats want to pass a bill making everyone – college and school kids, married with kids or not – eligible for the draft so that the poor don’t end up fighting another Vietnam. It makes a lot of sense but the Republicans are dead set against it with the exception of McCain who’s own son is currently in Iraq. Any morning now we’ll wake up to another war and realize that maybe a war with Iran is an extension of the current one. This, of course, may have been the original plan in the first place. There’s a thought.
